Detrol (Tolterodine)
General information
Detrol belongs to the class of drugs known as antispasmodics. It is used to treat an overactive bladder. By relaxing the muscles in the bladder, tolterodine improves your ability to control your urination. This medication helps to reduce leaking of urine, feelings of needing to urinate right away, and frequent trips to the bathroom.
Directions
Take Detrol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended starting dose for overactive bladder treatment is 2 mg twice daily, with or without food. Your doctor may recommend a lower dose (1 mg twice daily) if you experience bothersome side effects, if you have kidney or liver disease. Detrol should be taken at the same times each day.
Precautions
Before taking Detrol you should talk with your doctor if you have glaucoma, digestive problems, difficulty passing urine, enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), kidney disease, kidney failure, Myasthenia gravis, liver disease, liver failure, cirrhosis, hepatitis, irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia), any allergies. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy or cause blurred vision. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects of tolterodine.
Contraindications
You should not take Detrol if you are allergic to tolterodine or any of the ingredients of the medication, or if you have gastric retention (stomach obstruction), uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention. Discuss this with your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have chest pain, fast or uneven heart rate, difficulty breathing, blurred vision, feeling short of breath, swelling, painful or difficult urination, urinating less than usual, dry mouth, dry eyes, dizziness, stomach pain or upset, diarrhea, rapid weight gain, confusion, hallucinations, drowsiness, constipation, joint pain, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, hives. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: acetylcholinesterase inhibitor medications (donepezil, tacrine, rivastigmine), anticholinergic drugs (belladonna, atropine, glycopyrrolate, haloperidol), antibiotics or antifungals (ketoconazole, telithromycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin), cyclosporine, protease inhibitors (atazanavir, indinavir, ritonavir, amprenavir), Pramlintide, Vinblastine, narcotic medications (methadone, levomethadyl), medicines to treat psychiatric disorder (pimozide, thioridazine, chlorpromazine), heart rhythm medicine (procainamide, sotalol, quinidine, dofetilide). Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are fast, slow or irregular heartbeat, fainting, unusual excitement, mental or mood changes.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
