Bimat (Bimatoprost)

Product description

Bimat is a synthetic pharmaceutical agent with a pronounced hormone-mediated influence. Its chemical structure resembles that of prostaglandin, and its effects on the body significantly resemble those provided by the naturally produced compound. The drug selectively imitates some aspect of the hormone’s effects but does not bind to the prostaglandin-sensitive receptors.

The medication increases the efflux of the intraocular fluid, reducing the pressure. This effect is useful in the healing of open-angle glaucoma and other conditions associated with the high intraocular pressure. When using the agent, the risk of developing blindness as a result if this disease is significantly reduced.

The topical application is used to cure hypotrichosis. The prolonged course of therapy with the drug results in the increasing of the number of eyelashes, as well as in their enlargement and thickening.

Safety information

The medication’s interaction with other drugs is highly unlikely because of its extremely low concentration in the blood immediately after its application into the eye. According to the results of preclinical studies, this drug is transformed in a separate way, without affecting different hepatic enzymes that participate in the metabolism of other agents.

  • Nevertheless, it is recommended to avoid drinking alcohol several hours before and/or after using the drops.
  • Although the pharmaceutical composition is not habit-forming, it must never be applied longer than necessary in order to both avoid unwanted outcomes and increase the desired ones.
  • The medicine may worsen the condition of those patients who suffer from macular edema.
  • The pharmaceutical agent must be taken with special care by people suffering from various severe renal or liver diseases.

  • night blindness;

  • tunnel vision;

How to take

Only a small number of contraindications may prevent the therapy with the drug. The medication must not be taken by people with allergic reactions to some of its components, children and pregnant women (exceptionally if the dire necessity in this specific treatment greatly outweighs the potential risks and when under the care of a physician).

The medication is manufactured in the form of eye drops. The standard dose is one drop in one eye per day, usually in the evening. The administration in greater doses is rare. In fact, the application of higher doses or a more frequent treatment with the medication significantly reduces its positive effect. You must not increase the prescribed dose under any circumstances.

If you use contact lenses, you should remove them before applying the drug.

Side effects

If applied correctly and in full compliance with the pharmacist’s prescriptions, the medication seldom causes unwanted effects of notable severity or duration. Most symptoms, which can be registered throughout the therapy course, are correlated with topical reactions, such as eye irritation, burning, increased sensitivity to light, and discoloration of the iris.

Diverse negative results with systematic action are rather inconsiderable in number. However, in rare cases the therapeutic substance may cause:
